Kara Brockington, BA(Hon)
Registered Midwife
In 1994, I graduated from Queen's University with a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Sociology. Shortly thereafter, I became pregnant with my daughter, Sydney. It was during my pregnancy and birth experience that I became interested in midwifery care. I desired to support a woman's transformation into mothering and the birth of a family. For me, midwifery combined the essential elements of evidence-based maternity care with sensitive, woman-centered care.
I entered the Midwifery Education Program at Ryerson University in the fall of 1998. My early clinical placements were in downtown Toronto at Midwife Alliance and Riverdale Community Midwives. I also enjoyed additional placements with an obstetrician, nurse and at the Rose of Sharon - Services for Young Mothers. My final clinical year was completed at Midwifery Care ~ North Don River Valley.
In 1999, I became a certified Childbirth Educator through a joint program offered by Humber College and Sunnybrook and Women's College Health Sciences Centre. I taught childbirth preparation, infant care and siblings classes at the Women's College Hospital campus from 1999 until 2002. During this period I also attended births as a labour support provider.
I completed my Bachelor of Health Sciences degree in Midwifery in the Spring of 2004. I joined Midwifery Care ~ North Don River Valley in July 2004. I am now thrilled to begin working with the families and midwives of Midwives of York Region!

Registered Midwife
In 1996 I graduated from Dalhousie University with a BSc in Health Education. Following this I stayed home to raise my children; during this time my passion for women’s issues grew and I became interested in midwifery. In 1999 we moved to this area to be close to my husband’s family. In 2003 I began my midwifery degree at Ryerson University and I graduated with a BSc in midwifery in June 2007.
I live in Richmond Hill with my partner and our four children and I am very excited to be working as a midwife in this community. As a midwife I am able to combine my interests in health with my passion for working with women. I strive to promote normal birth and hope for each woman and her family to find a birth experience that is empowering and joyful.
Although I am busy looking after my family or working most of the time, I also love spending time outside, enjoying the woods of the Oak Ridges Moraine: mountain biking, running, walking or cross country skiing.

I come to midwifery with a Bachelor Health Sciences in Midwifery from Ryerson Polytechnic University (2004). It was with great excitement that I began working with Midwives of York Region immediately after graduation. Having completed several clinical placements over the past 5 years at various clinics throughout the GTA, it has always been my desire to return to my home community and support women and their partners as they embark upon or continue their journey into parenthood.
My interest in midwifery began with the birth of my second child, Emma, in 1994. Since that time midwifery has been an integral part of my life. While waiting to begin the Midwifery Education Programme, I became a consumer advocate for midwifery at both the local and provincial levels. My training as a doula for childbirth and postpartum support was completed in 1995. For over 9 years I provided labour and post partum support for women and their families throughout the GTA and York Region.
Thank you in advance for allowing me to share in your journey through pregnancy and childbirth!

Registered Midwife
I was born and raised in what is now the city of Toronto. During my time in high school, I developed an interest in women's health issues. This led me to study Anthropology at the University of Western Ontario (1989-1994). It was at this time that I first became aware of midwifery in Ontario. I did a great deal of volunteer work in Toronto to further explore women's and newborn's health concerns. This included working at a women's shelter, birthing couch at St. Joseph's Hospital and INFACT Canada (Infant Feeding Action Coalition). I was very excited to be accepted into the Midwifery Education Programme in 1997 at McMaster University. During my training I did placements in Hamilton, London, Ottawa, Cambridge as well as Southlake Hospital in Newmarket.
In 2002 I stared working full time with Cambridge Midwives. I was there for over 4 years, I participated in different community working groups as well I had various responsibilities at the clinic. I left Cambridge Midwives at the end of my first pregnancy, in 2007. Subsequently my family moved to Richmond Hill to be closer to both our families and my husbands work. In 2008, our son was born at Southlake Regional Hospital.
I am happy to be joining Midwives of York Region and I look forward to meeting you and your family!

Registered Midwife
In 1998, I graduated from York University with a Specialized Honours Degree in Kinesiology and Health Science. Prior to embarking on a career to become a Midwife, I worked as a Kinesiologist designing fitness, nutrition and rehabilitation programs primarily to women. I also worked in the insurance industry adjudicating injury and rehabilitation claims.
My long time interest in health science and particularly issues related to women make midwifery a perfect career choice for me. Also, I am excited to be part of a growing profession that observes and respects women's choices regarding their pregnancy and childbirth.
My Midwifery Degree was completed at Ryerson University in Toronto however my clinical training to become a midwife was spread over various placements in the GTA. During my training, I also elected to complete an international placement in London, England where I worked with many midwives and also an obstetrician. I had the opportunity to work with diverse and marginalized groups of women. This experience exposed me to the many special needs and challenges that certain groups of women may face. In England, I also worked with an osteopath and acupuncturist who specialize in pre-conceptual, pregnancy and post-partum care. I am very interested in the ways that complementary therapies can be utilized for pregnancy and childbirth which made this an invaluable experience for me.
I have recently moved to Newmarket to join the Midwives of York Region and I am honoured to serve the women and families of this community.

In 2011, I graduated from Ryerson University International Midwifery Program (IMPP), a bridging program for foreign trained midwives.
My original midwifery experience was in Essex England where I practiced in Colchester for several years after completing my education to become a Registered Nurse.
I moved to Australia and practiced Midwifery there for 2 years before coming to Canada. I worked as a Registered Nurse in the Birthing Unit at Southlake Regional Health Centre in Newmarket for many years. I truly enjoyed my position there, later deciding to return to my original roots – Midwifery.
I am honored and excited to be providing midwifery care to the women of this community through Midwives of York Region. I endeavour to provide the very best standard of care already set by this organization and our supporting hospital, Southlake.
I look forward to joining you in your exciting journey through your pregnancy and early motherhood!
